Free-sprited Judge Wilhelmina Carson is quick, witty and stubborn. Due Justice Judge Willa Carson Mystery Novel The Hunt For Justice Series Book 1 edition by Diane Capri Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
The main character is supposed to be a federal judge. She almost immediately begins to hyperventilate about being tricked into failing to give a Miranda warning to a person who is 1. Not a suspect in a crime, 2. Not in custody, 3. Not under interrogation and 4. Shows she's free to leave at anytime by doing just that. Then she decides she's going to be impeached and disbarred for something but appears to have little, if any, idea what that something is. I read on for a while, after all I don't quit books simply because the author refers to fire arm magazines as "clips" but soon realized I couldn't care less about the judge or her story. As a character the judge is an example of "there's no there there."I had great hopes upon finding a 10 book series. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Due Justice Judge Willa Carson Mystery Novel The Hunt For Justice Series Book 1 edition by Diane Capri Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Due Justice introduces to audiences the main character of Judge Wilhelmina (Willa) Carson as a federal judge in the Tampa Bay area. We get bits and pieces of Willa’s past throughout the novel. She is married to a man named George who owns and runs a very famous restaurant on the first floor of the building where they live. On the second floor, the judge and her husband reside with two dogs who are supposed to be guard dogs, but are more like fun-loving puppies to all who come in the door.
Willa, at least to me, is a unique character with strong convictions and a Mighty Mouse complex. Her husband attached that Mighty Mouse name to her because she always wants to rush in where fools shouldn’t because she wants to fix a problem. However, in this story, Willa is beginning to see that she cannot save all even though she tries very hard. I like her ability to read most of the other characters’ actions, words and body language whether they are in her court or elsewhere.
Willa especially tries to save her sister Carly from her own self-destruction and the multiple situations she seems to create in her life. Carly is the youngest and her insecurities and strong-willed nature tend to put her in tough spots. She also has a problem of not telling the truth even to Willa. Willa begins to try and figure out what Carly shared with her, including knowing the identity of a recent murder victim before the police! With Willa’s job and oath to office, she comes very close to being impeached as a federal judge.
Now Willa is not a saint; she is a cigar-toting woman in her private home and sometimes her actions put her in danger. In the novel, there are a couple uses of foul language, but overall the author does an excellent job of keeping readers engrossed in the mystery while at the same time building suspense. There were a couple of times I found myself laughing just imaging a scene in the book or reading Willa’s thoughts about some people in the higher echelons of society. I plan on reading the next novel in the series soon titled, Twisted Justice. Watch for a review coming soon!
Sentence fragments and short choppy sentences gave this book a ‘jittery’ feel, reading more like Capri’s hastily jotted ideas in a rough draft. The plus side is it also imparted a more ‘conversational’ tone as if Capri is telling readers the story live instead of writing it down for them to read later, and gives the book an ‘edgier’ feel, conveying more of a sense of tension. Sadly, that tension never developed.
Capri drops lots of names without including how they relate to her main character or including it much later. Many of the characters, too, had nicknames so until I got a firmer handle on them I was never sure if ‘Tori’ was ‘Victoria’ and ‘Cilla’ was ‘Pricilla’ or entirely different characters. They made it hard to keep track of who was who and where they fit in. Referring to her car by its pet name, Greta, didn’t help matters.
This book had way too much detailed description of offices, etc., and way too many words devoted to describing Tampa, FL for my taste. Neither did anything to advance the story and both made scenes drag.
I never really warmed to Willa Carson, Capri’s main character, either. She comes across as a bit arrogant in some places and not above using the clout of her federal judgeship to get what she wants in others. She, like most characters – make that every character – in the book, is also hugely wealthy and I always have a hard time getting into characters like that. On the positive side, Willa has been married to the same man for seventeen years. That’s a nice change of pace from the single/divorced/widowed main character many books feature.
The climax of a book – especially a mystery – should be full of heart racing, pulse pounding, breathtaking tension. The reader should fear there’s a chance the main character won’t get through it alive, that the bad guy(s) will win. That never happened here. The climax held no more tension than the rest of the story.
And what kind of car, Ms. Capri, has its trunk 4 feet off the ground? The hatch on a jacked up SUV maybe but not a car trunk.
